Mirosław Michał Drzewiecki (born July 8, 1956 in Łódź ) is a Polish politician. From November 16, 2007 to October 5, 2009 he was Minister of Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Poland .

Career

Drzewiecki studied law at the University of Łódź . After completing his studies, he founded a textile company and is now one of the richest people in Poland. He has been featured on the list of the richest Poles in the weekly Wprost several times . He began his political career after 1989 in the Liberal Democratic Congress and the Unia Wolności founded in 1994 . In 2001 he moved to the newly founded Platforma Obywatelska ( citizens' platform ). He was elected to the Polish Sejm for all three parties . In the parliamentary elections in Poland in 2007 he received a seat for the Sejm for the fifth time. In 2005 he was appointed sports policy spokesman for the Sejm parliamentary group of the Civic Platform and after winning the elections, Prime Minister Donald Tusk appointed him to his government as sports minister. One of his most important tasks in the new government was preparing for the 2012 European Football Championship , which took place in Poland and Ukraine . Drzewiecki was also the treasurer of the citizens' platform. On October 5, 2009, he resigned from his ministerial office due to his involvement in a political corruption affair in connection with the allegedly instrumental in preventing the introduction of a casino tax.

He is married and has two sons.
