Zbigniew Ćwiąkalski

Zbigniew Ćwiąkalski [ ˈzbʲigɲɛf ʨfʲɔŋˈkalsci ] (born March 9, 1950 in Łańcut ) is a Polish politician and professor of law at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow . From November 16, 2007 to January 21, 2009 he was Attorney General in Donald Tusk's government .

Life

1968 to 1972 Ćwiąkalski studied law at the Jagiellonian University. In the same year he became a member of the Polish United Workers' Party and remained so until 1981. 1979 Ćwiąkalski received his doctorate at the Jagiellonian University. In 1981 he became a member of Solidarność . The following year he became a board member of the first council for science and higher education . In 1986 he received a grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for an 18-month study visit to the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law and the University of Cologne . Ćwiąkalski completed his habilitation in 1991 and was appointed associate professor. Between 1991 and 1996 he acted as an advisor for the Polish Ministry of Education and in 1992/93 as an advisor to the Prime Minister Hanna Suchocka . He practiced as a lawyer in Kraków from 1995 to 2007 and appeared there in several major lawsuits, such as the one against Ryszard Krauze , one of the richest men in Poland, and the corruption lawsuit against Henryk Stokłosa , a former Polish senator. Above all, Ćwiąkalski's activities for Krauze were viewed critically by the Polish public. On January 20, 2009 Ćwiąkalski submitted his resignation as Minister of Justice. The reason was the suicide of a murderer by Krzysztof Olewnik , for which Ćwiąkalski took responsibility. He was succeeded by Andrzej Czuma .

From 2007 to 2010 and 2011 to 2014 he was a member of the Law Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences ( Polska Akademia Nauk , PAN).
