Adam Giersz

Adam Leon Giersz (born September 15, 1947 in Elbląg ) is a Polish table tennis trainer and was Minister for Sport and Tourism in Donald Tusk's cabinet from October 2009 to November 2011 .

Life

Adam Giersz studied Economics of Production ( Ekonomiki Produkcji ) at the University of Gdańsk and received his doctorate in this subject. From 1971 to 1988 Giersz was a lecturer at the University of Gdansk. In 1984 Giersz finished his training as a trainer at the Gdansk Sports University . Giersz was active as a coach of the Polish national team in table tennis from 1984 to 1993. In 1993 he was honored by the International Table Tennis Federation with the highest distinction, Excellent Coach , for his work . In the early 1990s he was a member of Donald Tusk's Kongres Liberalno-Demokratyczny ( Democratic-Liberal Congress ) party, for which he ran in the parliamentary elections in Poland in 1993 . From 1994 to 2001 he was President of the Polish Table Tennis Association ( Polski Związek Tenisa Stołowego ) and from 1998 to 2000 a member of the board of the European Table Tennis Union ( ETTU ). At the same time, Adam Giersz was CEO of Gasport Sp. Z oo from 1995 to 2001 , a company that sells table tennis equipment, among other things. In November 2001 he became head of the Department of Physical Culture and Sport and Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of National Education and Sport. With the dissolution of the Office for Physical Culture and Sport, he became the chairman of the Polish Sports Federation. In December 2004 Giersz became Deputy Minister of Sport and from February 2005 Vice President of the Polish Olympic Committee . From March 21, 2008 to November 27, 2008, he was Head of the Ministerial Office ( Gabinet Polityczny ) and, from November 28, 2008, State Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism. As the successor to Mirosław Drzewiecki , the non-party Adam Giersz became Minister of Sport and Tourism on October 14, 2009. After the parliamentary elections in 2011 , he left the government.

He was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland and a Knight of the Order of Polonia Restituta .

Adam Giersz is married and has one daughter.
