Hanna Suchocka (born April 3, 1946 in Pleszew ) is a Polish politician and lawyer . From 1992 to 1993 she was the first female Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and from 1997 to 2000 Minister of Justice and Attorney General .

Life

The pharmacist's daughter studied law at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan . After graduating in 1968, she received her doctorate in 1975. She then taught constitutional law at the same university until 1990 . From 1985 to 1986, Suchocka conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg . From 1988 to 1993 she was a professor at the Catholic University in Lublin .

Suchocka became a member of the block party Stronnictwo Demokratyczne (German Democratic Party , SD for short) as early as 1968, but was also active in the opposition union Solidarność from 1980 . In the same year she became a member of the SD in the Sejm , the Polish parliament, for five years . In 1982 she voted there against the abolition of independent trade unions.

After the system change , she became a member of the first freely elected Sejm in 1989 and was re-elected as a member of parliament several times until 1997. During this time she was a functionary of the liberal party Unia Demokratyczna (German Democratic Union , UD for short) and its successor party Unia Wolności (German Freedom Union , UW for short).

From July 1992, Suchocka was Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland . On May 28, 1993, however, it failed due to a vote of no confidence by conservative MPs who disagreed with the accelerated liberalization of the economy that it was promoting. On May 29, the Sejm was dissolved, but she held office until October 17, 1993 and was then replaced by Waldemar Pawlak .

From 1997 to 2000 Suchocka belonged to the government of Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek as Minister of Justice and was also the state's attorney general . Between 2001 and 2013 she represented Poland as ambassador to the Holy See . In 2014 she was appointed by Pope Francis as a member of the newly created Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors and confirmed in 2018.

On June 13th, 2015, the Slovakian President Andrej Kiska presented Hanna Suchocka with the international Adalbert Prize . The award ceremony took place in Bratislava Castle. She has been a member of the Adalbert Foundation's award committee since 2016 .
