Jerzy Janusz Kropiwnicki (born July 5, 1945 in Częstochowa ) is a Polish politician of the Prawo i Sprawiedliwość ( Law and Justice ) and was mayor of Łódź .

Life

In 1968 Jerzy Kropiwnicki graduated from Szkoła Główna Handlowa (SGH, Warsaw School of Commerce) with a degree in foreign trade . During his studies he was a member of the Socialist Youth ( Związek Młodzieży Socjalistycznej ) and the Polish Youth ( Związek Młodzieży Polskiej ). After completing his studies, he worked at the University of Łódź , where he received his doctorate in 1973 . In 1968 he joined the Związek Nauczycielstwa Polskiego (Polish Teachers' Union) and remained a member until 1980. In 1980 Kropiwnicki joined Solidarność and worked for the Łódź region. On December 13, 1981, he organized a protest against the Polish state. On the same day declared Wojciech Jaruzelski the state of emergency in Poland and Jerzy Kropiwnicki was arrested. In July 1984 he was released under an amnesty. In 1989 he became a member of the newly founded Zjednoczenie Chrześcijańsko-Narodowe (Christian National Union). From 1991 to 1993 and 2000 to 2002 he was Vice-President of the Board of Directors and from 1997 Chairman of the Regional Board of the Łódź Region. At the same time, Kropiwnicki was a member of the Sejm from 1991 to 1993 . He was Minister for Labor and Social Policy from December 23, 1991 to June 5, 1992. In 1997 he was able to win a seat in the Sejm again. Here he was Minister for Regional Development and Construction between June 16, 2000 and October 19, 2001. In 2002 Kropiwnicki became chairman of the Zjednoczenie Chrześcijańsko-Narodowe and president of the city of Łódź. In the local elections in 2006 Kropiwnicki stood again as a candidate for Prawo i Sprawiedliwość successfully for the office of mayor of Łódź. He was dismissed prematurely from this position by a referendum on January 17, 2010. With a turnout of 22.2 percent, almost 95 percent of the voters voted for his removal. In 2016 he was appointed for a six-year term as a member of the Rada Polityki Pieniężnej (Council for Monetary Policy) at Narodowy Bank Polski .
