Adam Glapiński (born April 9, 1950 in Warsaw ) is a Polish economist and politician who has been President of the Polish National Bank since 2016 . Glapiński was a member of the Sejm and the Polish Senate, and a member of the Monetary Policy Council between 2010 and 2016 . He was also Minister for Building and Regional Planning and Minister for External Economic Relations.

Life

Glapiński attended the Stefan Batory Lyceum in Warsaw until 1968 and graduated in 1972 with a degree in economics from the SGPiS (today Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie ). In the same year he did an internship at the Banque de France . He then did his doctorate and habilitation in 2004 at his alma mater . In 2013 he was appointed professor of economics.

Since 1974 he worked at the Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie as a lecturer and later as a full professor. He headed the department for political economy and history of economic dogmas. He also taught at the Polish Academy of Sciences (1978–1983), the Inter-University Postgraduate Center in Dubrovnik (1986–1989), the University of Colorado Boulder (1993–1998), the United States Business and Industrial Council of the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas (1996), the Institut supérieur de gestion (1994–2005) and Edward Lipiński School of Economics and Law in Kielce (2004–2007). In 1988 he received a scholarship from the Société historique et littéraire polonaise in Paris.

In the 1980s, Glapiński was a member of Solidarność . During martial law in Poland he was co-chair of Solidarność at SGPiS. In 1989 he was a co-founder of the "Democratic Center" association. In 1990 he co-founded the Christian Democratic party Porozumienie Centrum and from 1991 to 1993 he was the party's vice chairman. He was also a co-founder of the Warsaw branch of the liberal congresses Liberalno-Demokratieyczny . In 1991 he was Minister for Building and Regional Planning in the government of Jan Krzysztof Bielecki . In the elections for the first Sejm in 1991 Glapiński moved as a member of the Sejm. He became Minister for External Economic Relations in Jan Olszewski's cabinet . In 1997 he became a member of the Senate for the Tarnów Voivodeship with the support of the Catholic-nationalist Ruch Odbudowy Polski . However, he soon left the party and became a member of the Christian National Association and the electoral alliance Akcja Wyborcza Solidarność . In the Senate he was deputy chairman of the Committee on National Economy. He was also a member of the joint committee of the European Union and Poland. In 2001 he was not re-elected to the Senate.

He became chairman of the board of directors of Rozwoju Eksportu in 1992 and of Centralwings airline and mining company KGHM Polska Miedź in 2007 . In 2007/08 he was Chairman of the Board and General Director of Polkomtel .

Between 1993 and 2001 he headed the Institute for Economic and Political Freedom. He has also been a member of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society since 2002 and of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought (ESHET) since 2007 .

On February 5, 2009, Glapiński and Ryszard Bugaj became economic advisers to Poland's President Lech Kaczyński . On February 16, 2010, the President announced his decision to send Glapiński to the Monetary Policy Council.

On February 29, 2016, Poland's President Andrzej Duda appointed him to the board of the Polish National Bank at the request of National Bank President Marek Belka . He held this position until June 9, 2016. In May 2016, Duda nominated him for the vacant position of President. On June 10, 2016, the Sejm confirmed him as President of the Polish National Bank. Adam Glapiński took up his position on June 21, 2016 after taking the oath of office.
