Andrzej Stelmachowski [ ˈand.ʐɛj stɛlmaˈxɔfskʲi ] (born January 28, 1925 in Poznan , † April 6, 2009 in Warsaw ) was a Polish legal scholar and politician .

Life

Stelmachowski joined All-Polish Youth before the war and was a member of the Polish Home Army during World War II . In 1947 he began studying law at the University of Poznan , from which he graduated with a doctorate . In 1962 he became a professor at the University of Wroclaw and since 1969 taught as a professor at the University of Warsaw . He specialized in civil and agricultural law .

He has been advising Solidarność since 1980 and took part in the round table that met on the transition from a socialist state to a democratic republic. He presided over the Senate as Senate Marshal (1989–1991), headed the Ministry of Education as Minister (1991–1992) and advised the President (2007–2009).

Stelmachowski was the founder of the Association "Polish Community" (Stowarzyszenie "Wspólnota Polska") based in Warsaw . As its long-standing president (1990 to May 11, 2008) he campaigned for Poland abroad and took care of a. for a revitalization of the World Games of Poland Abroad .

Stelmachowski died on April 6, 2009 at the age of 84. Polish President Lech Kaczyński expressed his condolences to family and friends, as well as politicians from across Poland's political spectrum and representatives of Polish emigre organizations in Belarus , Lithuania and the United States .
