Tomasz Paweł Grodzki (born May 13, 1958 in Stettin ) is a Polish surgeon and politician ( PO ), professor of medical science and senator in the 9th and 10th electoral term in the Polish Senate , of which he has been chairman or Senate Marshal since November 12, 2019 .

Profession and personal

Grodzki graduated from the Second Secondary School in Szczecin (1977) and the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin (1983). At the same university he received his doctorate in 1991 (based on the dissertation entitled “Evaluation of the effects of total pleural resection on ventilation due to recurrent idiopathic pneumothorax”) and in 2003 (based on the dissertation entitled “Evaluation of selected parameters of the respiratory system after surgery the flap removal compared to the lung segment removal with the radioisotope ”). In 2010 he received the title of Professor of Medical Sciences.

He graduated as a specialist in thoracic surgery in 1991 and is also involved in lung transplantation. He is a member of numerous national and international surgeon organizations, including the first Pole to be accepted into the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. He practiced professionally in the “Fachkrankenhaus Prof. Alfred Sokołowski” in Stettin, became head of the department for thoracic surgery in 1995 and director of this facility in 1998. He held this position until 2016.

Tomasz Grodzki is married to the ophthalmologist Joanna Grodzki and has two daughters with her.

In 2014 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order .

Political career

In the local elections in 2006, 2010 and 2014, he was elected to the Szczecin City Council on his party's list , the Citizens' Platform . In 2014 he ran for the European Parliament and received 26,863 votes, which was unsuccessful.

In the parliamentary elections in Poland in 2015 , he ran for the citizens' platform in constituency No. 97 for the Senate. He received the Senator's mandate for the 9th electoral term with 69,887 votes.

For the parliamentary elections in Poland in 2019 , he was re-elected to the Senate as a candidate for the newly founded citizen coalition and received 149,245 votes. On November 12, 2019, he was elected as a joint opposition candidate by the Citizens' Coalition, the electoral alliance under the Polish People's Party and the electoral alliance under the League of Democratic Left for the position of Senate Marshal of the 10th electoral term with a majority of 51 against 48 votes.
