August Chełkowski

August Chełkowski (born February 2, 1927 in Telkwice near Sztum , † October 31, 1999 in Warsaw ) was a Polish physicist, university professor and politician.

Life

Chełkowski completed his physics studies in 1952, received his doctorate in 1959 and completed his habilitation in 1963 at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan , where he was a lecturer until 1965. After changing to the external location of the Jagiellonian University in Katowice , posing as a 1968 University of Silesia had become independent, he was there in 1973 as an associate professor and a 1990 full professor appointed. From 1968 to 1972 he was also Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, since January 1981 Vice-Rector and since September 1981 Rector of the University. Since September 1980 he was a member of the Solidarność union . After martial law had been declared , he was interned and removed from office in January 1982. After the reactivation of Solidarność he was elected to the Senate of the Republic of Poland in 1989, to which he belonged until his death and was also Senate Marshal from 1991 to 1993 .

In 2009 he was posthumously awarded the Commander's Cross with the Star of Polonia Restituta . The Institute of Physics at the University of Silesia and a street in Katowice were named after Chełkowski.

Chełkowski was married and had a daughter and four sons.
