Jules Thurmann (born November 5, 1804 in Neuf-Brisach , † July 25, 1855 in Pruntrut ) was a Franco-Swiss geologist and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Thurm. "

Thurmann was born in Alsace as the son of a pioneer captain and after the death of their father in 1806 the family moved to Pruntrut in the Swiss Jura. Thurmann studied law and mathematics at the University of Strasbourg from 1820 to 1824 and then at the École des Mines in Paris. From 1832 he was a teacher of mathematics and natural sciences at the Collège in Pruntrut and from 1837 to 1843 head of the local teachers' college. He was Bernese Grand Councilor from 1837 to 1839 and 1844/45.

Thurmann was a pioneer in researching the geology of the Swiss Jura and in 1832 recognized its nature as a mountain range of folds. He was president of the first congress of the French geological society in Pruntrut in 1838 and 1853 of the congress of the Swiss natural science society. As a botanist, he was a pioneer in plant geography and was involved in setting up the Botanical Garden in Pruntrut.

In 1835 he introduced the name Neokom for the lower level of the chalk (the name was derived from Neuchâtel , where Thurmann found formations of this period).

In 1832 he was the founder of the Société de statistique des districts du Jura and in 1847 the founding president of the Société jurassienne d'émulation.

In 2002 the asteroid (42191) Thurmann was named after him.
