Yucca queretaroensis (English common name : Bioconvex Denticulate Leaf-Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca queretaroensis grows solitary and forms a trunk 2 to 3.5 meters high. It forms small, rhizomatous groups. The variable, stiff, thin, rough, biconvex, yellow leaves are 30 to 60 cm long. They are (like all representatives of the Chaenocarpa section , Rupicolae series ) finely serrated on the leaf margins.

The densely branched inflorescence that begins in the leaves is 0.5 to 0.8 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white to cream-colored flowers are 2 to 3 cm long and about 1.5 cm in diameter. The flowering period extends from April to June.

Occurrence and systematics

Yucca queretaroensis is related to the geographically isolated Yucca thompsoniana and Yucca rostrata the other representatives of the Chaenocarpa section , Rupicolae series . Similarities with Yucca linearifolia the section Yucca series Yucca are clear. Yucca queretaroensis is extremely endangered. This extraordinary species is rare in the collections.

Yucca queretaroensis is endemic to the state of Queretaro in Mexico . There it is widespread on stony soils on flat or steep slopes at altitudes between 1000 and 1300 m. It grows together with Yucca filifera , Dasylirion longissimum , Agave striata and numerous species of cacti .

The botanical name was chosen after the Queretaro state of the locality of Yucca queretaroensis . The first description by Ignacio Piña Lujan under the name Yucca queretaroensis was published in 1989.
