Agave striata is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Espadin, Espadillo, Guapilla, Soyata, Sotolito Agave".

description

Agave striata grows individually, forms a short trunk or forms large, compact groups with heights of 100 to 200 cm and 200 to 300 cm in diameter. The light green to reddish striped, stiff, strongly curved, linear leaves are 25 to 60 cm long and 5 to 10 cm wide. The leaf margins are variably curved and finely serrated. The sturdy, gray terminal mandrel is 1 to 5 cm long.

The paniculate, straight to curved, twisted inflorescence is 1.5 to 2.5 m high. The green, yellow, red to purple tubular flowers appear in the upper half of the inflorescence on short branches and are 30 to 40 mm long.

The round to triangular, dark brown, three-chambered capsule fruits are 13 to 18 mm long and 8 to 10 mm wide. The black, crescent-shaped seeds are 3 to 6 mm long.

The flowering period extends from June to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Systematics and distribution

Agave striata grows in Mexico in the states of Coahuila , Durango , Hidalgo , Nuevo León , Puebla , Querétaro , San Luis Potosí , Tamaulipas and Zacatecas on dry, stony slopes, on limestone soil at an altitude of 1000 to 2100 m. It is associated with Yucca potosina and various types of cacti.

The first description by Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini was published in 1833. Some of the numerous synonyms of Agave striata Zucc. are Agave recurva Zucc. (1845) and Agave striata var. Recurva (Zucc.) Baker (1877).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Agave striata subsp. striata : It occurs in northeastern Mexico.
  • Agave striata subsp. falcata (Engelm.) Gentry : It occurs in the Mexican states of Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León and Zacatecas.

Agave striata is a member of the Striatae group . It is located in central Mexico. Characteristic are the dense, compact groups, which, however, are variable in growth form, leaf and flower structure due to the enormous distribution area. The subspecies falcata differs in its leaf structure. It is similar to the closely related Agave stricta , which differs in the flower structure.

Agave striata can survive short periods of frost down to minus 8 ° C when it is dry.
