Yucca linearifolia (English common name : Linear Denticulate Leaf Yucca) is a species of the genus Yucca in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
Yucca linearifolia forms stems 2 to 3 m high. The variable, thin, linear, green to blue, finely toothed leaves are 30 to 45 cm long and 0.5 cm wide.
The branched inflorescence that begins in the leaves is 0.6 to 0.8 m high. The pendulous, bell-shaped flowers are 3 to 3.5 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter. The six equally shaped bracts are white to cream in color. The flowering period extends from May to June.
Occurrence
Yucca linearifolia is endemic to Mexico in the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Santa Maria in the states of Nuevo León and Coahuila in plains or in limestone hills at altitudes of 1100 to 1400 meters. This species often grows together with Yucca filifera , Agave striata , Dasylirion spec., Agave spec. and different types of cactus .
Yucca linearifolia is frost hardy to –20 ° C in Central Europe , in the winter months when it is dry. It is perfectly hardy in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This species has been cultivated in the F. Hochstätter collection for over a decade.
Systematics
The botanical name refers to the linear leaves. The first description by Karen Husum Clary under the name Yucca linearifolia was published in 1995.
Yucca linearifolia is a species from the Yucca series Yucca . The fleshy fruits are characteristic, although at first glance they can be classified as the representative of the Chaenocarpa series Rupicolae , Yucca queretaroensis with capsule-shaped fruits.
