The Sierra Madre Oriental is a mountain range in northeast Mexico that extends for more than 1000 km in the states of Coahuila , Nuevo León , Tamaulipas , San Luis Potosí , Hidalgo to the north of the states of Puebla and Querétaro and there with the Sierra Volcánica Transversally central Mexico united. The mountain range continues, however, in a south-easterly direction and ends in the mountains of the Sierra Norte de Oaxaca , some of which are still over 3000 m high .

geography

geology

In contrast to the other mountain ranges in Mexico, the Sierra Madre Oriental seems to be of non-volcanic origin. On the other hand, powerful limestone from the Cretaceous period played a significant role in the formation of the landscape in the Sierra Madre Oriental , so that karst features such as caves are common, such as the Swallow Cave in the east of the state of San Luis Potosí .

mountains

The highest point in the north of the approx. 2500 km long mountain range is Cerro Potosí (approx. 3720 m); the highest mountain in the southeast is the Cerro Pelón (approx. 3270 m). Other mountain peaks are the Picacho San Onofre (3540 m), the Picachos el Fraile (2380 m), the Cerro Tía Chena (2620 m) and the Cerro la Joya (2920 m) in the south.

climate

The rather humid and rainy climate on the east side is influenced by the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico ; here the clouds rain down and consequently almost all rivers and streams flow east. In contrast, the west side is mostly dry and almost uninhabited.

Flora and fauna

The mountain range is largely composed of Madrean pine and oak forests and is known for its great biodiversity and the large number of endemic species .

Although separated from the main part of the Sierra Madre Oriental by the Rio Grande , the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas belong to the Sierra Madre Oriental in terms of flora .
