Yucca yucatana (English common name : Tropical Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca yucatana grows solitary and forms a trunk 6 to 8 meters high. The variable leaves are 30 to 50 cm long; they are green and brown around the edges.

The flowering period extends from August to October. The densely branched, short inflorescence that begins in the leaves becomes 0.4 to 0.6 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white to cream-colored flowers are 3 to 4 cm long and about 2 cm in diameter.

Occurrence

Yucca yucatana is common in Mexico , Belize and Guatemala in tropical regions up to altitudes of 2100 m. This species is little known and rarely found in collections.

Systematics

This species is a member of the Section Yucca series Yucca , but geographically isolated. Yucca yucatana is related to Yucca elephantipes .

The first description by the American botanist Georg Engelmann under the name Yucca yucatana was published in 1873. The type epithet yucatana was chosen after the state of Yucatán in Mexico, one of the localities of this type.
