Janusz Lewandowski
Janusz Antoni Lewandowski (born June 13, 1951 in Lublin ) is a Polish economist and liberal politician. He was a member of the Sejm for the first, third and fourth legislative periods and was Polish Minister for Privatization. From 2004 to 2010 he was a member of the European Parliament , elected via the list of the Civic Platform ( Platforma Obywatelska , PO). From 2010 to 2014 he was a member of the European Commission , where he was responsible for financial planning and budget .
biography
Professional and scientific activity
Janusz Lewandowski studied economics at the University of Gdansk , received a master's degree in 1974 and a doctorate in economics in 1984. He taught at Gdańsk University from 1974 to 1983. He then worked for the Polish Ocean Lines . Lewandowski lectured at Harvard University and founded the Research Institute for Market Economy ( Instytut Badań nad Gospodarką Rynkową ) in Gdańsk .
He worked for important Polish magazines.
Political activity
Janusz Lewandowski was from 1980 to 1989 economic advisor to the " Solidarność " union. In 1988 he was a co-founder of the Liberal Democratic Congress , a party of the Gdańsk Liberals. He was Minister for Property Conversions in the governments of Jan Krzysztof Bielecki (1990-1991) and Hanna Suchocka (1992-1993) and Member of the Sejm in the 1st Cadence (1991-1993). After his party's election defeat in 1993, he worked as an expert from 1994 to 1997, including abroad. In 1997 he was elected Sejm of the 3rd cadence from the list of the Democratic Union and in 2001 he was elected Sejm of the 4th cadence from the list of the newly founded Platforma Obywatelska . Lewandowski is a member of the board of the Citizens Platform.
From April 2003 to April 2004 he was an observer at the European Parliament. In the 2004 European elections , he was elected to the European Parliament with 79,879 votes . He was chairman of the budget committee for two and a half years . In the 2009 European elections in Poland , he was re-elected to the European Parliament with 107,529 votes. In November 2009 he was nominated as Commissioner for Financial Planning and Budget in the Barroso II Commission and took office on February 10, 2010.
In the 2014 European elections , Lewandowski ran as the top candidate for the Civic Platform in the Pomeranian Voivodeship . He received 20.17% of the vote and a seat in the European Parliament, whereupon he resigned from his commissioner post on July 1, 2014 and moved to Parliament. On July 23, 2014 he was elected Chairman of the Parliamentary Budget Committee.
