Martine Reicherts (born April 13, 1957 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg politician. After the 2014 European elections , she was a member of the European Commission responsible for justice, fundamental rights and citizenship until the Juncker Commission took office.

life and career

Reicherts studied law in Luxembourg, Nice and Aix-en-Provence between 1975 and 1979 . She then did a DEA in business law at the University of Panthéon-Assas . From 1979 to 1984 she worked as a lawyer in Luxembourg. Her career in the European Commission began in February 1984 in the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation.

After several positions in various Directorates-General and Cabinets, she became Head of Service in the Office for Buildings, Facilities and Logistics - Luxembourg in 2003 and Head of the Publications Office of the European Union in 2007 . In 2014 she was Viviane Reding's successor in the Barroso II Commission for a short time as Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship . She was nominated for the post by the Lëtzebuerger Sozialistesch Aarbechterpartei . From September 2015 she headed the Directorate General for Education and Culture . She retired at the end of January 2018.
