Ricardo Calvo Mínguez

Ricardo Calvo Mínguez (born October 22, 1943 in Alcoi , † September 26, 2002 ) was a Spanish medic, chess player and historian.

Life

Ricardo Calvo played in the Spanish team at five Chess Olympiads ( 1966 , 1968 , 1970 , 1974 and 1978 ) and at the 1970 European Team Championship in Kapfenberg . In 1973 he was awarded the title of International Master by FIDE . From 1982 to 1989 he played in the German Federal Chess League for Bayern Munich and became German team champion in 1983 , 1985 , 1986 and 1989 . In the Spanish team championship he played from 1963 to 1967 for CA Alcoy , with whom he was champion in 1965 , in 1971, 1972 and from 1974 to 1977 for the team of CA Schweppes Madrid , with which he was champion in 1971 , 1972 , 1974 and 1975 , 1973 for the master CA Caja Insular de Ahorros , as well as 1980 and 1981 for CE Terrassa . He took part in the European Club Cup in 1975/76 with CA Schweppes Madrid and 1985/86 with Bayern Munich. After he had expressed himself critically about the World Chess Federation, he was declared a persona non grata by FIDE in 1987 .

Calvo's highest Elo rating was 2475, he reached this in July 1973. Ricardo Calvo was also active as a chess journalist, chess historian and chess politician. He died of complications from esophageal cancer .
