The Expressway S22 ( pol. For, expressway S22 ') is an expressway in Poland and connects Elblag with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad Oblast located Kaliningrad . On the Russian side, the continuation of the road is called R516 . The S22 and R516 are part of the European route 28 .

history

It was built as part of the Reichsautobahn Berlin – Königsberg . Only one of the two carriageways was built, so it only had two lanes. It was completed between 1936 and 1938. After the Second World War, fell as a result of decisions Tehran Conference , the Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference the southern parts of East Prussia to Poland, north to the Soviet Union part of the RSFSR , so that the former Imperial Highway in the field of two states lay. It was not marked as a motorway, but a normal extra-urban road. A border crossing was not set up in the two countries until the political change.

Completed sections

From 2006 to 2008 the S22 was completely renovated and modernized. However, the route was not expanded with two lanes over its entire length. Of the 50.2 kilometers, 38.9 kilometers between the Elbląg- Wschód and Maciejewo nodes are equipped with one, and 12.2 kilometers from the Maciejewo node to the border crossing with two lanes. The cost was set at 479 million zlotys (equivalent to 120 million euros). The border crossing Mamonowo  II - Grzechotki (Heiligenbeil - Rehfeld) between Russia and Poland was opened on December 7, 2010. The capacity of the transition is designed for 26,000 passenger cars, 1,250 trucks and 150 buses per day.

Further planning

In Poland's infrastructure and development plan ( Narodowy Plan Rozwoju ) of 2005, it was planned that the S22 would be extended after 2013 along the national road 22 from Elbląg to Gorzów Wielkopolski as a supplement to the existing network of expressways and to ensure regional sustainability. It would create a stretch of over 370 kilometers.
