Tomaszów Lubelski is a city in southeastern Poland . After belonging to the former Zamość Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998 , it has been part of the Lublin Voivodeship since 1999 . Tomaszów Lubelski is the main town of the Powiat Tomaszowski and had 19,550 inhabitants in 2016.
history
The town was founded at the beginning of the 17th century by Jan Zamoyski and has been known by its current name since 1613. In 1621 it received city rights .
In 1772 it came to Austria ( Galicia ) after the first partition of Poland . In the time of the Napoleonic Wars it was in 1809 as part of the Zamoscer circle to the Duchy of Warsaw surrendered and was after the Congress of Vienna to Russian Congress Poland . After that, some German colonies emerged in the area, such as B. Sabaudia . During the First World War at the end of August 1914, during the Battle of Komarów, heavy fighting between Russian and Austro-Hungarian troops took place in the vicinity of the place .
Until the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the city had a significant Jewish population. Near the city was during the German occupation of the Belzec extermination camp (1941-42).

The gmina wiejska Tomaszów Lubelski has an area of 170.78 km² and 11,431 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2019). It includes 29 localities with a Schulzenamt.
