Mordechai Josef Leiner

Mordechai Josef Leiner ( Hebrew מרדכי יוסף ליינר) (* 1802 in Tomaschov ; † 1854 in Izbica ) was a Polish rabbi , Hasidic scholar and founder of the Hasidic Izhbitza-Radzyn dynasty .

Life

He was born the son of Reb Yaakov . Reb Yaakov's father was Reb Mordechai von Sekul , a descendant of Rabbi Shoul Wahl . He lost his father at the age of two. Leiner became a student of Simcha Bunem von Przysucha . His schoolmates were u. a. Menachem Mendel von Kotzk and Rabbi Yosef of Yartshev , who were also born in Tomashov.

When Menachem Mendel was ordained Rebbe in Kotzk, Reb Mordechai Josef became his student. In 1839 he became a Rebbe himself in Tomaschov , but later moved to Izbica .

His most important student was Rabbi Jehuda Leib Eiger (1816–1888), grandson of Rabbi Akiva Eiger . Among his students were Rabbi Zadok HaKohen from Lublin (1823-1900), his own son Rabbi Jaakov Leiner (1828-1878) and his son Rabbi Gershon Henoch from Radzyn .

Mordechai Josef Leiner is buried in an ohel (grave house) built for him in the Jewish cemetery in Izbica .
