  • The federal autobahn  64 (abbreviation: BAB 64 ) - short form: Autobahn 64 (abbreviation: A 64 ) - is a 14 kilometer long German autobahn . It runs on the Moselle heights from Trier to Luxembourg . It was originally planned as a section of the A 48 . The missing piece between the A 1 near Schweich and the end of the A 64 near Trier-Ehrang ( B 52 ), the Meulenwald motorway , was not implemented for environmental reasons. After the reorganization of the motorway numbering in the early 1990s, the western part, from the Luxembourg border to Trier, was renamed the A 64. The route continued in Luxembourg is Autoroute 1 to Luxembourg (city) .

    The A 64 is a part of the European route 44 .

The former Mesenich motorway border crossing has been expanded on the Luxembourg side of the border into a service area with a gas station on both sides. Because of Luxembourg's mineral oil tax advantages, it is a popular destination for German tank tourists .

The signposting as a motorway begins west of the Biewerbachtal bridge , on which three lanes are marked. To the east of this, the road has been expanded to around 2 km with four lanes as far as the “Dicke Buche” car park since 2012. From there, the extended route bends from the planned Meulenwald motorway and leads with four partially narrowed lanes as federal road 52 into the Moselle valley.

The continuation through the Meulenwald , a large forest area northeast of Trier, is repeatedly brought up by local politicians as a so-called northern bypass, without the necessary adjustment to the urgent needs of the federal transport route plan being achieved. Critics point out the high costs of bridges and tunnels as well as the fragmentation of the Meulenwald. Proponents see this as a necessary section of a European transit route and a necessary relief of the A 602 in the Moselle valley between the Trier city area and Schweich. According to the latest information, the Meulenwald motorway should not be included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan in 2015 as a priority.

Since the summer of 2004, the so-called West Bypass Trier , also known as the " Mosel ascent ", was in the planning phase . The plan was to use a new Moselle bridge over Igel to lead Bundesstraße 51 from Konz to the west of the Trier mountain on a new route to the Moselle heights and connect it to the A 64. However, on May 12, 2005, the Koblenz Higher Administrative Court overturned the planning approval decision . In March 2013, the Rhineland-Palatinate state government announced that these two projects would be abandoned for good.
