The car Route 1 , just A1 , is one of the longer veins of Luxembourg motorway network , but not nearly as much traffic as the Autoroutes 3 , 4 and 6 .

The A1 motorway begins at the Gaspericher Kreuz (cross between A3 / A6 / A1) to the Luxembourg-German border crossing at Wasserbillig / Mesenich. It is popularly known as the "Tréirer Autobunn" (Trier Autobahn). It essentially follows the course of the N1, via which traffic was directed from Luxembourg to Trier before the opening of the A1 .

In the Grand Duchy, the development of motorway projects began in the late 1960s. The oldest section was opened between Kirchberg and Senningerberg in 1969. The A1 was divided into 4 sections and gradually opened. From the Potaschberg exit to the Wasserbillig / Mesenich border crossing, where the Luxembourg A1 seamlessly merges with the German A 64 to Trier . This section was opened to traffic on September 6, 1988.

On July 11, 1990, the section followed from the Munsbach exit to the Potaschberg exit. The completion took place with the release of the last section from the exit Senningerberg to the exit Munsbach on June 26, 1992, to which part of the city bypass "Boulevard Contournement" was attached to the Gaspericher Kreuz.

The total length of the A1 in its final state today is 36.203 km.

Directly behind the Gaspericher Kreuz, the A1 runs through the Howald tunnel (468 m long) and between the Sandweiler and Kirchberg exits through the Cents tunnel (310 m long). There are currently 11 exits (sortie), of which the Flaxweiler exit (No. 12) can only be used as an exit in the direction of Trier and as an entrance in the direction of Luxembourg.

Another special feature is the Kirchberg exit, which, in addition to its function as an exit, also serves as the Grünewald motorway junction with the A7 . The Kirchberg-Grünewald section was redeveloped in 2002 for the opening of the A7 motorway.

For reasons of nature protection, two game bridges , which are shaped like two-sided funnels, were constructed.
