Grevenmacher ( Luxembourgish Gréiwemaacher ) is the capital of the canton of the same name in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . Until 2015 Grevenmacher was also the main town of the district ; In 2015 the districts were abolished and their powers were transferred to the Ministry of the Interior. The Grevenmacher community, to which Potaschberg belongs, has only one section.

People of 79 different nationalities live here; 58.51 percent of the 4,917 residents are Luxembourgers, 41.85 percent are non-Luxembourgers.

The “Gréiwemaacher Drauwen-Wäifest” takes place in Grevenmacher every year at the beginning of September. This wine festival is one of the largest in the region.

structure

The community consists of the localities Grevenmacher and Potaschberg. She is a member of various municipal associations.

traffic

The Grevenmacher barrage, which was built in the course of the Moselle canalisation , sluices around 10,000 vessels a year. Another task is the regulation of the Moselle level.

The A1 ( Trier - Luxembourg ) passes directly by the city . This can be reached via National Road 14. Along the banks of the Moselle, National Road 10 leads through the city to Wasserbillig or Wormeldingen and Remich .

There is a direct connection to the community of Wellen with a road bridge over the Moselle (# 47) . The dilapidated predecessor structure was demolished in 2011 and replaced by a new building.

Grevenmacher station was the end of the line from Ettelbrück until traffic ceased . Only a few freight trains still travel on the section from Wasserbillig to the Moselle port of Mertert . The station in Wellen on the Thionville – Trier railway line is only around 300 meters from the Moselle bridge. Trains of the German regional train line RB 82 Elbling-Express stop here in the direction of Perl or Wittlich via Trier .

The great fire of 1822

On November 18, 1822, there was a major fire disaster, u. a. 147 houses, stables and barns were destroyed. As a result of the catastrophe, the deputation of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Lützemburg initiated a large-scale rally in favor of the victims.
