Frantz Seimetz
Frantz Seimetz (born April 21, 1858 in Grevenmacher , † October 26, 1934 in Limpertsberg ) was a Luxembourgish portrait and landscape painter of impressionism .
Seimetz initially worked as a painter and varnisher. At the age of 16 he painted his first work - a flower still life. The industrialist Antoine Pescatore noticed his artistic talent and supported his education.
In 1875 he began his studies in Brussels , from 1879 to 1881 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and finally from 1881 to 1887 at the École des beaux-arts de Paris .
With a ticket received from the United States Honorary Consul, he traveled to Canada , the West Indies and Mexico in 1887 . In the United States , he spent a few years in Dubuque, Iowa , then in five months went down the Mississippi on a houseboat.
In 1897 he married Marie-Antoinette Bourger von Arlon, also a gifted artist. He settled in Echternach , then moved to Arlon , and in 1923 to Luxembourg City , where the couple moved into an old house.
Frantz Seimetz was the first Luxembourg painter who managed to make a living from art alone. Many of his self-portraits are reminiscent of Rembrandt and Frans Hals.
Seimetz painted his last picture in 1932. Then he wrote down his memoir Der Feuersalamander , first in German, then in Luxembourgish and finally in his Mosel dialect.
