history
The settlement history of the municipality can be traced back to the times of the Celts and Romans, which is attested by the "Groëstaen" and the Celtic barrows ( tumuli ).
The abundance of forests and the steep slope of the Syr made the municipality the cradle of the Luxembourg steel industry in the middle of the 18th century. In 1755, Baron J. Ph. D'Arnoult et de Soleuvre, Lord in Berburg, founded the steel works named after his property. 50 years later, JL Faber, the then tenant of the Berburger Hütte, built an ironworks further below. Eventually the smeltery was taken over by the Metz brothers (co-founders of Arbed ) and then closed when Minette was rediscovered in the south of Luxembourg . The iron gap was sold to J. Lamort, printer and paper manufacturer from Luxembourg. Since textile rags were switched to wood in papermaking, a wood grinding mill built below Manternach supplied the wood pulp required for this. With the beginning of the First World War, the paper mill came to an abrupt end. After the war, B. Neis from Manternach opened a workshop for agricultural machines. After the parental barn had become too small, workshops were built on the banks of the Syr, where a wide range of products was manufactured, from saws to hay blowers to threshing machines.
Today the community is home to various medium-sized wood and metalworking companies. Agricultural businesses are still represented in larger numbers.
The construction of the neighboring Trier-Luxemburg motorway has led to a population increase, especially in Münschecker, which has made it necessary to establish a new electoral district.
Lellig has so far most likely retained its rural character. The former cemetery has been restored and is a witness of the cultural past.
The seat of the municipal administration is in Manternach. Here the rectory was restored.
Given the strong population growth and the activity of the local associations, a Center scolaire et sportif was set up in Berbourg .
As a reception center for the “Manternacher Fiels” nature reserve, “A Wiewesch” has been set up in a former farm in the middle of Manternach, where exhibits on the natural environment and the history of the community as well as tourist information, such as teaching and hiking trails, are offered.
The municipality is a member of the municipal associations SIAEG, SICEC, SIDERE, SIGI, SYNECOSPORT and SYVICOL.
The partnership with Saint-Désert in Burgundy has opened up a European dimension for the municipality of Manternach.
