The federal motorway 392 (abbreviation: BAB 392 ) - short form: Autobahn 392 (abbreviation: A 392 ) - also called Braunschweiger Nordtangente - is a motorway that runs in the northwest of the Braunschweig city center and connects the town of Watenbüttel with Hamburger Straße . It has a length of about four kilometers.

A special structural feature is that when coming from Kreuz Ölper , the main carriageway merges directly into Celler Strasse, while the extension to Hamburger Strasse is attached to the secondary carriageway.

Further construction

The original plan was to continue building the A 392 between the Watenbüttel junctions and the A 2 . For this purpose, the Okeraue should be crossed. The embankment of the motorway ends abruptly at the federal highway 214 , to which the traffic is led via a single-lane ramp.

Current plans

A further construction of the A 392 is currently only planned at the western end. The current plans of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 include a guided tour to Ernst-Böhme-Strasse in Veltenhof , which is then to be upgraded to the B 214 .

Discarded plans

For the further construction to the west, the original planning provided for a route along the southern and western edge of Watenbüttel, which should flow into Celler Heerstraße at the level of the waste disposal center. This route variant will not be pursued further within the framework of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030.

At the Hamburger Straße junction, preliminary work can be seen for further construction to the east; here the A 392 was originally supposed to continue to the Braunschweig-Ost junction (Berliner Heerstraße). Additional connection points were to be created on Bienroder Weg and Bevenroder Straße. A study carried out on behalf of the city of Braunschweig recommends abandoning the previous plans for an extended motorway. It would be expected that (before the gap between the A 39 and the A 2 in the southeast of the city) long-distance traffic from the Hessian area in the direction of Berlin would use the A 392 as a shortcut between the A 391 and the A 2 . Traffic from Wolfsburg in the direction of Braunschweig-Stadtmitte or to the VW plant in Braunschweig would also take the route via the expanded A 392. In addition, there would be enormous noise pollution in the districts between the A 2 and the A 392. In addition, according to the study, the construction costs would have to be assessed as “considerable”, since the infrastructure to be crossed is complex. On the other hand, there is only the relief of inner-city traffic in the area of Rebenring and the north-eastern part of the B 248 (Hans-Sommer-Strasse, Berliner Strasse, through-town BS-Volkmarode). Instead, the report recommends that the city build a "normal" road between Hamburger Strasse and Bienroder Weg, as this is of no interest for long-distance traffic and it relieves traffic around the Rebenring sufficiently.
