1949 to 1959

In 1949, the brothers Fritz (1912–1968), Daniel (1914–1994), Willi (1919–2003) and Heinz (1922–1999) , who came from Diefflen , founded the “Saarland Design Circle” with the support of Saarbrücken's Mayor Peter Zimmer ( SGK) with the aim of organizing trade fairs in Saarbrücken. The company initially signed a five-year contract with the city, which provided 26,000 m² of space on Schanzenberg. From April 29 to May 14, 1950, the first Saar fair with 330 exhibitors took place on the site. From 1952, there were also more French exhibitors at the Saar fair, as many import regulations for the fair were relaxed. In October 1955, the SGK signed a further 25-year contract with the city, which, among other things, regulated the further expansion of the exhibition halls. In 1956 the fair reached its best ever value with 360,000 visitors. When it became part of Germany in 1957, the fair lost a large part of the French exhibitors, but was still able to grow with 1,900 exhibitors.

1959 to 2012

In 1959 the “Saarländische Gestaltungskreis” was renamed “Saarmesse GmbH”. This year, several other trade fairs arose, which still take place today on the exhibition grounds in Saarbrücken. The Saar fair gained more and more importance nationally and internationally, which was shown, among other things, by the fact that the then Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher took over the patronage of the fair in 1973 . The city of Saarbrücken was the ideal sponsor of the event, while "Saarmesse GmbH" was the economic sponsor. The company remained in the sole ownership of the Grandmontagne family and passed on to the children of the founding family Mechthild, Eva and Eric Grandmontagne.

From 2012

On August 1, 2012, the shares in Saarmesse GmbH were transferred from the Grandmontagne family to the city of Saarbrücken. As part of a cooperation agreement, the management of Saarmesse GmbH was taken over by Messe Berlin GmbH, represented by Ulrich Nierhoff (authorized signatory and general representative of Messe Berlin) and Willy Kausch (managing director of the Berlin KIT Group GmbH, a subsidiary of Berliner Messe) as managing director.  The collaboration with Messe Berlin GmbH ended in December 2013.

Since January 2014

From January 2014 to May 2016, Marion Linder was sole, provisional managing director of Saarmesse GmbH. She has been the company's commercial director since May 2016.

Ralf Kirch, managing director of the Congress-Centrum Saar GmbH (Congress- und Saarlandhalle), was appointed operational managing director of Saarmesse GmbH in May 2016.

After the shutdown of the exhibition center on Schanzenberg (end of March 2017), Haus & Garten Saar was the first exhibition to take place in Saarbrücken's E-Werk in April 2017.
