Fernão Lopes

Fernão Lopes (* around 1380 ; † 1460 ) was a Portuguese historian .

Life

Lopes is first mentioned in 1418 as a royal archivist . In 1434 the Portuguese King Edward I commissioned him with a chronicle of the previous rulers; the section 1357-1411 was preserved. Lope's masterpiece Crónica de Dom João I ( Chronicle of King John I ) took up many documentary evidence and material from other contemporary chronicles. Lopes was critical, open, and a good reporter of key historical events; He is also considered an excellent representative of Portuguese prose of the 15th century.
