Fernão Lopes de Castanheda

Fernão Lopes de Castanheda (* around 1480; † 1559 ) was a Portuguese historian in the early Renaissance .

Life

Castanheda was the illegitimate son of a royal official. In 1528 he accompanied his father to India , where he served in Goa and the Moluccas . When he returned in 1538, he had gathered enough material from written and oral sources for his great historical work. The first volume of his Historia do descobrimento e conquista da India pelos portugueses ( History of the discovery and conquest of India by the Portuguese ) appeared in 1551. Six more volumes appeared during Castanheda's lifetime, three posthumously. The work was soon translated into the main European languages.
