Cronista-mor ( Portuguese ; roughly: Supreme Chronicler ) was the highest office of chronicler in the Kingdom of Portugal . The person concerned exercised the function of court chronicler and state historian or official archivist and court historiographer of the Portuguese royal family.

The first to hold this post was Fernão Lopes , who in 1434 was commissioned by Dom Duarte to write the Chronicle of the Kings of Portugal. In the 17th and 18th centuries the office was often exercised by Cistercian monks .

Almeida Garrett was dismissed from office in 1841 after severe criticism of Minister António José de Ávila and the position was not filled again. In 1842 by decree of 30 November by Costa Cabral , the position of the Supreme chronicler of the Kingdom with the "guarda-mor" (Eng .: Supreme Guardian / main Guardian , the Director of the National Archives) of the Torre do Tombo ( Guarda- mor da Torre do Tombo . see the Portuguese Lista ) connected.
