In the years after 1935 several large barracks were built east of Möncheweg and a large marshalling yard was laid out northwest of the village. For the members of the military, the employees of the Reichsbahn and their families, new living space was to be created here not far from their workplaces. This resulted in the "Lindenbergsiedlung". The construction of the first houses began in 1938. Leading military figures were used to name the streets in the new settlement. In the summer of 1941 the first houses could be occupied. The Möncheweg, the most important access road, was not given an asphalt surface until the end of the war .

On March 31, 1945, aerial bombs were dropped on the settlement. 17 residents were killed and eight houses were destroyed in this attack. After the war ended, the streets were renamed after important scientists. In the years that followed, mostly multi-family houses, but also the first homes, were built. As a result, the number of residents rose to over 4,000 at times.

In 1952 a primary school was built on Bunsenstrasse, and in 1957 the bus depot on Lindenbergallee. On July 28, 1957, the foundation stone was laid for the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Martin-Chemnitz-Kirche on Möncheweg and on January 18, 1959 the church was consecrated. A parish and rectory and a day care center were also built.

Since the 2000s, the area of the Lindenbergsiedlung has had the official status of a district with the name Lindenberg . Thus Lindenberg is the 37th district of Braunschweig. In March 2010, the residential area Roselies-Kaserne was laid out east of Lindenberg, the streets of the new building area were also named after scientists.

coat of arms

Braunschweig-Lindenberg coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided diagonally by a white written banner and shows the Braunschweig castle lion on a base as an outline drawing in the red field and an equally stylized tree in a green field.

In the written banner, from bottom to top, in capital letters, first “Braunschweig” and behind it, separated by a lying diamond, “Lindenberg” and underneath “Elmaussicht”, as these two settlements share the coat of arms.

The lion stands for belonging to the city of Braunschweig (with the colors red and white) and the tree for part of the name of the Lindenbergsiedlung and the Mastbruch-Elmaussicht settlement , which indicates the nearby Elm ridge .
