Melverode is a district in the south of Braunschweig and belongs to the city district 212 - Heidberg-Melverode .

geography

Melverode is around five kilometers south of Braunschweig city center. Neighboring districts are Stöckheim in the south and Heidberg in the east. The Springbach forms the border with Stöckheim and the A 36 forms the border with Heidberg . In the west joins the Oker and with it the local recreation area Südsee , in the north Melverode is bordered by the A 39 .

history

Melverode around 1899

Melverode is older than 1100 years and was probably founded in the first half of the 9th century. The first documentary mention is dated to the year 1007. The most important building of Melverode is the St. Nicolai Church , built in the 13th century , which was probably built in the late Romanesque style as a boatman's and merchant's church.

At the time of merchant shipping, Melverode had a port on the Oker, which was still navigable at that time . The place was thus an important station for merchants, traders and river boatmen on the north-south trade route, which ran from Erfurt via Wolfenbüttel / Braunschweig to the Baltic or North Sea, but also had a branch via Halberstadt to Leipzig.

On April 1, 1934, the previously independent village of Melverode was incorporated into the city of Braunschweig. Previously it was within the Braunschweiger Landwehr , which with the Grenzgraben (now Springbach) formed the southern municipal boundary. After the incorporation, new districts emerged east of Leipziger Strasse and south of the old town center and Melverode turned into an urban suburb. With a few exceptions, the streets in the newly created districts bear the names of Silesian towns.

Todays situation

Today Melverode has about 3,700 inhabitants. The average age of the residents in Melverode is relatively high compared to other Braunschweig districts, as there are no new development areas and relatively few single-family houses in Melverode due to the lack of space.

Infrastructure

Compared to the larger neighboring districts, Melverode has a good infrastructure.

Education and health

There is a day care center and a primary school. In the northern part of Melverode there is also the private HEH ( Herzogin Elisabeth Hospital ).

Shopping

The shopping possibilities in Melverode were relatively few until October 2009. There was only a bakery and a few other small shops, but no supermarket, so the residents of Melverode had to go to Heidberg or Stöckheim to go shopping. However, since the beginning of October 2009 there has also been a supermarket in Melverode, which opened as part of the renovation of the Görlitzstrasse shopping center. In this context, many existing shops also expanded their retail space. Thus, many more shopping opportunities have now been created.

Economy and Transport

Melverode is connected to the federal autobahn 36 via the junction BS-Melverode (a semi-junction because you can only drive to and from the BS-Süd motorway junction and towards the city center ) and BS-Heidberg. The “Alte Leipziger Straße” industrial park is located at the south junction.

Several lines of the Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH run through the district : tram line 1 in the direction of Stöckheim or Wenden and bus lines 431 ( main station - Helmstedter Straße ) and 442 (Helmstedter Straße - Melverode). Tram line 2 in the direction of Heidberg or Siegfriedviertel also runs on the outskirts .

Parishes

In Melverode there is the Evangelical Lutheran Dietrich Bonhoeffer parish. It includes the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Memorial Church (the official name due to the consecration of the church on the 1st of Advent in 1966) and the St. Nikolai Church. Parish pastor has been Pastor Detlef Gottwald since 2018. The parish has been part of the Parish Association of Braunschweig South of the Braunschweig Provost since June 2014.

Since the Bonhoeffer Weeks in February and March 2012, which the congregation organized in cooperation with the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Association (dbv), an exhibition on life has been in the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Church (the name that has developed in parlance) and the work of the theologian and resistance fighter Bonhoeffer. This exhibition was conceived at the Dietrich Bonhoeffer School in Linz, traveled to around 40 European cities and can now be seen as a permanent exhibition in Melverode.

Leisure and club life

There are several clubs in town. The largest clubs are the SV Melverode-Heidberg, the Hubertus Melverode shooting club, the volunteer fire brigade and the Melverode cultural ring. Well-known events outside of the region are the “Christmas tree throwing”, the setting up of the maypole and the Christmas market at the Görlitzstrasse shopping center. In Melverode there is also an adventure playground and an allotment garden club.

coat of arms

Braunschweig-Melverode coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a red sailing ship with three golden balls in the sail on a golden shield.

The ship is a symbol or landmark of St. Nicholas , the namesake of the medieval village church. According to legend, he is said to have saved the city of Myra from starvation with shiploads of grain. The ship also refers to the former Oker harbor in Melverode. The three spheres represent another attribute of St. Nicholas, therefore they adorn the sail. The colors red and yellow are based on the older Brunswick national colors, they are derived from the ducal Brunswick family coat of arms, which showed two golden lions on a red field. The coat of arms should also symbolize an "always happy journey".

Arnold Rabbow designed the coat of arms. It was accepted by the Melverode cultural ring on February 29, 1980.
