The place is located on the west bank of the Oker at the heights of the natural area Thieder Lößhügelland , which rises to the southwest to Thieder Lindenberg and to the west to the chalk formation of Geitelder Berg up to ( 111  m above sea level ). The Leiferder Kirchhof is about 75 m above sea level. The field Mark extends in the north-south direction between Rüningen and to Wolfenbüttel belonging bulk Stöckheim and adjacent to the embossed by meadows Okeraue mainly includes fertile loess . The eastern border forms the partly still meandering Oker.

The Thiedebach flows from the west to the town and the Oker and is crossed by the historic Braunschweig – Frankfurt trunk road, today's Bundesstrasse 248 , to the west of the town center . The Deiweg , which crossed the Oker towards Stöckheim earlier at the Fischerbrücke, also comes from the direction of Steterburg .

history

Leiferde was first mentioned in 1176 under the name Lefvorde , which is derived from the basic word -furt and the Old High German word leo for hill, dam.

In the Thirty Years War the place was very badly damaged. A mill on the Oker was mentioned as early as 1276, the free flood of which flowed into the Kulkegraben . For the year 1283 the place name Thiedebach is mentioned as an outbuilding of the Steterburg monastery and from 1586 a brickworks with lime kiln on Thiedebach . The old customs house has been attested since 1606, and a courtyard is still there today on the B 248.

In 1974, as part of the regional reform, Leiferde was incorporated into the city of Braunschweig as the southernmost part of the Wolfenbüttel district . At around the same time, the Im Rübenkamp settlements or later on Thiedebacher Weg began a brisk new building activity, which led to a doubling of the population in a short time. Nevertheless, Leiferde has been able to retain its village character.

Since the middle of the 19th century, sugar beets have been grown in Leiferde, as in other parts of the Braunschweig region . The seeds were usually planted by hand, often with the help of school children in the fields. It was not until the invention of the beet drill through the Leiferder Kantor Ludwig Lueders solved the mechanical sowing, the Handsaat from the beet. Lüders designed and built his machine (1850–55, official demonstration in 1860) to make it easier for himself to cultivate the large school garden. He received a Braunschweig patent for this invention and won first prize in a competition in Mahndorf .

Todays situation

According to the population register, 1951 people lived in Leiferde on December 31, 2017. The number of inhabitants grew in the 1970s due to the Im Rübenkamp settlement and from 2005 due to further new development areas south of the B 248 and Am Rapskamp . However, there are no more local shops in Leiferde; the next supermarkets are only in the neighboring districts of Rüningen and Stöckheim.

Leiferde is connected to the line network via bus line 413 operated by Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH . You can reach the Braunschweig city center within 20 minutes.

Leiferde has been on the Braunschweig – Bad Harzburg railway line since 1838 , but the train station is no longer used by passengers.

In June 2016, the fishing bridge between Leiferde and Stöckheim was closed to car traffic due to its disrepair, so that it is diverted between the districts via the Rüninger Oker bridge . There were conflicts of interest between the residents, the city district council and the city administration over the location and design of a new bridge, for which a solution was found. The new building is planned for 2021.

church

In 1864, Leiferde received a simple church built in the neo-Romanesque style according to plans by the parish architect Carl Müller. It was consecrated on May 14, 1865 and was officially named St. Christophorus Church in 1999. In the church there is a wooden plaque from the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), which commemorates the Swedish Colonel David Sibbald, who died on June 19, 1641 from a gunshot wound.

Club life

The Musikzug Leiferde eV has existed since 1957. The young miners' march initially consisted of 2 drummers and 8 whistlers, but in 1966 the club switched to wind instruments. The approximately 50 appearances per year in the city of Braunschweig and the surrounding area include tattoos, parades, but also increasingly independent concerts.
