Günter Staudt (botanist)

Günter Staudt (born August 10, 1926 in Berlin ; † May 22, 2008 in Bad Krozingen ) was a German botanist . He was the first to describe the Iturup strawberry as an octoploid wild species. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Staudt ".

Staudt completed his habilitation in 1966 at the Technical University of Berlin . From 1967 to 1974 he was head of the department for genetics and cytology at the institute for grapevine breeding Geilweilerhof near Siebeldingen and then from 1974 to 1991 director of the State Viticulture Institute Freiburg .

His work focused on growth, genetics and the history of cultivated plants . He was one of the renowned experts for strawberries and viticulture , but also for wheat and barley .
