Gabino Díaz Merchán (born February 26, 1926 in Mora ) is a Spanish Roman Catholic clergyman and senior archbishop of Oviedo .

Life

Gabino Díaz Merchán was ordained a priest on July 13, 1952 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 23, 1965 Bishop of Guadix . The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Archbishop Antonio Riberi , donated him episcopal ordination on August 22nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Felix Romero Menjibar , Bishop of Jaén , and Anastasio Granados García , Auxiliary Bishop in Toledo .

He participated in the last session of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. From 1981 to 1987 he was chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference .

On August 4, 1969, he was appointed Archbishop of Oviedo . On January 7, 2002, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
