Camillo Mazzella

Camillo Cardinal Mazzella SJ (born February 10, 1833 in Vitulano , Kingdom of the Two Sicilies , † March 26, 1900 in Rome ) was an Italian theologian and cardinal .

Life

Mazzella was born on February 10, 1833 in Vitulano near Benevento . He was ordained a priest on September 8, 1855 with papal dispensation because he had not yet reached the canonical age of 25 to receive the sacrament of ordination . He joined the Society of Jesus and made profession on September 5, 1859 .

He taught theology at Fourvières and at Georgetown University in Washington . He was a professor at Woodstock College, then was called to Rome to teach at the Pontifical Gregorian University . He later headed the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas as President .

Pope Leo XIII. accepted him in the consistory of June 7, 1886 as cardinal deacon of Sant'Adriano al Foro in the college of cardinals . From 1893 to 1897 he headed the Study Congregation as prefect . On June 22, 1896 he became cardinal priest of Santa Maria in Traspontina . He was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina on April 18, 1897 . The Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome Lucido Maria Parocchi donated him episcopal ordination on May 8 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Casimiro Gennari , titular archbishop of Lepanto , and his nephew Orazio Mazzella , auxiliary bishop in Bari . He is the only Jesuit so far who has been appointed cardinal bishop.

Mazzella was Prefect of the Congregation for Sacred Rites from 1897 until his death . He died on March 26, 1900 in Rome and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery.

Family relationships

His twin brother Enrico Mazzella SJ was Bishop of Bari . His other brother Pietro Mazzella also joined the Jesuits and was also a priest.
