Dario Edoardo Viganò (born June 27, 1962 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is an Italian clergyman and communication scientist . From 2015 to March 2018 he was Prefect of the Communications Secretariat (today: Dicastery for Communications ) of the Roman Curia and had previously been Director of the Vatican Television Center (Centro Televisivo Vaticano, CTV) since 2013 .

Life

Dario Edoardo Viganò studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1987 by the Archbishop of Milan, Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini SJ .

In addition to working in the Office for Social Communication of the Archdiocese of Milan, he became a student in 1997 with the work Un cinema ogni campanile. Chiesa e cinema nella diocesi di Milano, PhD on the history of cinema in communication studies from the Pontifical University of the Salesians . In 1998 he worked for the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI).

In the mid-1990s he was teaching deontological ethics in the media at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore . From 1998 he taught semiotics of cinema and audiovisual media as well as semiotics and business communication at the LUMSA in Rome. Since 2000 he has been professor of communication theory at the Pontifical Lateran University and director of the Redemptor Hominis Institute . He is also head of the Centro Interdisciplinare Lateranense . He also teaches at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali (LUISS) . Since 2004 he has been a board member of Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo , an institution for film culture in Italy. He is the director of the news magazine Rivista del Cinematografo .

On January 22, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as head of the Centro Televisivo Vaticano (CTV).

Viganò has been a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology since 2010 . He has been a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem since 2009 . In 2004 he was appointed chaplain to His Holiness by Pope John Paul II .

On June 27, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him the first prefect of the communications secretariat established with Motu proprio on the same day with effect from June 29, 2015.

On September 29, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Clergy and Education Congregation .

On March 19, 2018, he asked Pope Francis to relinquish his position as Prefect of the Communications Secretariat, which the Pope accepted two days later. This was preceded by severe criticism of Viganò's selective publication of a letter from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. on the occasion of the presentation of a series of books on the theology of his successor.

On August 31, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Vice Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, with special responsibility for public relations.
