style

On Van der Graaf Generator's third studio album after the reunification in 2005, there are no longer any long compositions for the first time and now the organ is more dominant than (as on Trisector ) the guitar . The band shows their versatility, however, because the album combines calm, complex and aggressive pieces that are either reminiscent of the progressive rock of the 1970s and Peter Hammill's solo albums or integrate modern and experimental sounds. The lyrics are mostly about numbers, formulas and the beauty of math .

reception

The album was positively received by the press. Roger T. of Prog Sphere doubts that A Grounding in Numbers could appeal to a larger audience than just the old fans of the band. Rob Hughes from Classic Rock Presents Prog thinks it is the strongest album since the reunification and Jochen Rindfrey from Babyblauen Seiten sums it up: “Despite some recourse to the glorious past, A Grounding in Numbers is not a backward-looking album. Van der Graaf Generator are one of the few bands from the golden age of progressive rock that still make convincing music today. "
