Immensa Aeterni Dei

With the Apostolic Constitution Immensa Aeterni Dei of January 22, 1588, Pope Sixtus V , after the Council of Trent (1545–1563), set up new congregations and restructured the existing congregations of the Roman Curia .

The 15 congregations established by Immensa Aeterni Dei are:

  • Congregatio prima pro sancta Inquisitione
  • Congregatio secunda per Signatura Gratiae
  • Congregatio tertia pro erectione ecclesiarum et provisionibus consistorialibus
  • Congregatio quarta pro ubertate annonae Status Ecclesiastici
  • Congregatio quinta per sacris ritibus et caeremoniis
  • Congregatio sexta per classe paranda et servanda ad Status Ecclesiastici defensionem
  • Congregatio septima pro Iudice librorum prohibitorum
  • Congregatio octava pro executione et interpretatione concilii Tridentini
  • Congregatio nona pro Status Ecclesiastici gravaminibus sublevandis
  • Congregatio decima pro Universitate Studii Romani
  • Congregatio undecima per consultationibus regularium
  • Congregatio duodecima per consultationibus episcoporum et aliorum praelatorum
  • Congregatio decimatertia pro viis, pontibus et aquis curandis
  • Congregatio decimaquarta per typographia Vaticana
  • Congregatio decimaquinta per consultationibus negociorum Status Ecclesiastici.

Holy Congregation for Rites

The Pope set up the " Holy Congregation for Rites ", which was supposed to take on the task of establishing norms for the practice of worship and carrying out the canonization processes. Its current name is the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints .

Congregation for Bishops

Another addition to the Roman Curia was the establishment of the Congregation for the Bishops , which was directly subordinate to the Pope (Consistorial Congregation).
