The Goggolori. A Bavarian fairy tale with music is an opera in 8 pictures and an epilogue by Wilfried Hiller with a libretto by Michael Ende .

action

At the time of the Thirty Years' War , the farmer Irwing made a pact with the goblin Goggolori : he will ensure a rich harvest, but he should own the soul of Irwing's daughter Zeipoth. When Zeipoth was 14 years old and the Goggolori wanted to redeem his prize, the parents regretted the pact. But even the attempt of the Ullerin (a witch whom the peasants have called for help) to get rid of the Goggolori with the plague fails. Finally, Zeipoth gives the Goggolori her own death, "so that he can finally die ..."

history

Michael Ende's libretto is based on old Bavarian folk tales from the goblin Goggolori, which are essentially passed down through the book Der Goggolore (1935) by the scientist and writer Otto Reuther . Since Ende treated the subject freely in his poetry, but also used motifs from Reuthers' book, Reuther's heirs brought a copyright lawsuit against Michael Ende, which was ultimately rejected by the Federal Court of Justice in 1990 .

Wilfried Hiller composed the Goggolori between 1982–83. He dedicated the piece to his teachers Carl Orff (who also had the character of Goggolori appear in his comedy Astutuli ) and Günter Bialas . Since then, the opera has established a permanent place on the stage and was performed several times , especially at the Orff Festival in Andechs in Andechs Monastery . Since 2002, a puppet theater adaptation of the original production has been on the program of the Munich Marionette Theater , for which Siegfried Böhmke , the Goggolori puppet leader of the world premiere, is the artistic director.
