Dermot Ryan

Dermot J. Ryan (born June 24, 1924 in Clondalkin , Ireland , † February 21, 1985 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Dublin .

Life

Dermot Ryan was ordained a priest on May 28, 1950 .

On December 29, 1971 Dermot Ryan was made archbishop, the episcopal ordination took place on February 13, 1972. Before the Irish referendum against abortion , the "Pro-Life Referendum" of 1983, he took a position and stated publicly that a "Yes" vote would forever prevent any attempt to legalize abortion in Ireland.

On April 8, 1984 he was called Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , whereupon he resigned as Archbishop on September 1, 1984. Ryan died shortly after arriving in Rome.

The Archbishop Ryan Park in Dublin is named after him, as he donated the land on which the park is situated, in 1974 the city. Ryan was considered more liberal. More recently, it became known that in 1983 he had learned of the sexual abuse of students in seminaries by priests in his diocese . He did not investigate these cases further, and some of the perpetrators were only transferred to another location.
