Viliam Judák (born November 9, 1957 in Harvelka in the Kysuce region , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak theologian and bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Nitra .

Life

From 1980 to 1985 he studied theology at the Roman Catholic theological Cyril and Methodius Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava (CMBF) and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1985 in Nitra. In pastoral care as a chaplain in Nitra and Drietoma , where he was administrator of the parish until 1990. While studying at the CMBF in Bratislava at the same time, he received his doctorate in sacred theology in 1991. As early as September 1, 1990, he became prefect at the St. Gorazd seminary in Nitra and on October 18, 1991 ecclesiastical judge. From July 1, 1996 to July 1, 2001, he was the seminary rector of the St. Gorazd seminary in Nitra. In 1997 Pope John Paul II granted him the title of Chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ).

Since 1990 he has given lectures on church history at the CMBF of the Comenius University in Bratislava and from 1991 to 2005 also at the Theological Institute Nitra (a branch of the CMBF), in the department of ethics and catechetics , and later he worked as a tutor at Constantine -the-philosopher-university-university. In July 1993 he was qualified as a university lecturer at the Roman Catholic theological Cyril and Methodius Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava; from 1995 to 1998 he was also vice dean of the faculty. On December 13, 1997, he was appointed Professor of Catholic Theology by the President of the Slovak Republic .

From 1997 to 2006 he was head of the Department of Church History at the CMBF of the Comenius University in Bratislava. In 2001 he was elected Faculty Dean by the Academic Senate of the Faculty and held this post until 2004.

On June 9, 2005 he was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed diocesan bishop of Nitra. He received the episcopal ordination through Cardinal Ján Chryzostom Korec ; Co- consecrators were the Prefect of the Pontifical Committee for the World Eucharistic Congress , Cardinal Jozef Tomko , and the Apostolic Nuncio in Slovakia, Archbishop Henryk Józef Nowacki .

Since October 3, 2006 he has been Vice-President of the Bishops' Conference of Slovakia .

As a professional historian, he deals with the time of Christian antiquity and the Middle Ages with regard to the Slovak church history. He is the author of several monographs in the field of church history and spiritual literature.
