Slovak Central Mountains

The Slovak Central Uplands ( Slovenské stredohorie ) is a mountain group in the south of central Slovakia of about 70 × 80 km. It is primarily a geomorphological unit, because the term is of lesser importance in everyday use. The town of Zvolen ( Altsohl ) is roughly in the center , while the mining and university town of Banská Bystrica ( Neusohl ) is on the northern edge .
The Slovak Central Uplands are part of the Inner Western Carpathians . It is limited
- in the north-west and north of the Fatra-Tatra region ,
- in the east of the Slovak Ore Mountains ( Slovenské rudohorie ),
- in the south-east of Juhoslovenská kotlina ( South Slovak Basin ) and
- in the southwest of the Pannonian Basin .
The mountain group is divided into the following geomorphological sub-units:
- Vtáčnik ( Bird Mountains ),
- Pohronský Inovec ,
- Štiavnické vrchy ( Schemnitz Mountains ),
- Kremnické vrchy ( Kremnické Mountains ),
- Poľana ,
- Ostrôžky ,
- Javorie ,
- Krupinská planina ,
- Zvolenská kotlina ,
- Pliešovská kotlina ,
- Žiarska kotlina .
The highest point is the Poľana with 1458 m.
There are three large nature reserves in the mountain range - the Poľana , Ponitrie and Štiavnické vrchy nature reserves .
