It is located roughly in a triangle between the cities of Detva , Veľký Krtíš and Lučenec and is about 20 × 10 km in size. Similar to other mountains of the Slovak Central Uplands, the Ostrôžky are of volcanic origin. The highest mountain is called Ostrôžka ( 877  m nm ).

The mountains border on the Zvolenská kotlina basin in the north, the Slovak Ore Mountains in the east, the Juhoslovenská kotlina basin in the south and the Krupinská planina plateau and the Javorie mountains in the west.
