The Protected Landscape Area Strážovské vrchy ( Slovak Chránená krajinná oblasť Strážovské vrchy ) is a protected landscape area in northwestern Slovakia . It covers the Strážovské vrchy and Súľovské vrchy mountains and is mostly in the political district of Trenčiansky kraj (Okresy Ilava , Považská Bystrica , Prievidza and Púchov ), with smaller parts in Žilinský kraj (Okresy Bytča and Žilina ).

The administrative headquarters are in Považská Bystrica .

One of the rock formations at Súľov-Hradná

The conservation area is made up of two different mountains. In the north lies the Súľovské vrchy mountains, in the center of which there is an erosion basin surrounded by various bizarre and pointed rock formations. Good examples of these formations are Súľovské skaly (Súľov rocks) near Súľov-Hradná or Manínska tiesňava (Manín gorge) near Záskalie , which is considered to be the narrowest gorge in Slovakia. The highest mountain in this part is Veľký Manín ( 891  m nm ).

The Strážovské vrchy, on the other hand, are a core mountain range that is home to a variety of rocks of varying hardness. But most often come limestone - dolomite - and quartzite forms before. In contrast to the Súľovské vrchy, this area is characterized by dense forests and deep valleys and furrows. The highest mountain is the Strážov ( 1213  m nm ), but also the Vápeč ( 956  m nm ) is remarkable for its karst landscape at the summit.

Beeches , firs and maples grow most frequently everywhere , and elms are less common . The mixed forest of firs and beeches is widespread in the higher elevations. Warmth-loving mountain and high mountain species are represented in the lime-loving flora. In addition, several West Carpathian or Carpathian endemics or subendemites such as the Slavic Pasque Flower , Hainburg feather carnation , Dianthus nitidus (genus Carnations ), Carpathian soldanelle , Tatra fescue , yellow scabious or Carduus collinus (genus calendula ) grow here .

The animal world is mainly tied to the deciduous forests, steppe species can be found less often. Game is widespread everywhere, with numerous deer , mouflon , roe deer and wild boar . Of the large carnivores in Slovakia, brown bears , lynxes and wolves are present in the protected landscape area. Some other animal species are the red and black apollo , swallowtail and sail butterfly from the insects, mountain newt , aesculapian snake and smooth snake from the amphibians as well as kestrel , tree falcon , buzzard , honey buzzard , hawk , capercaillie , common raven and red chalk from the birds.
