The landscape protection area Horná Orava ( Slovak Chránená krajinná oblasť Horná Orava ) is a landscape protection area in the far north of Slovakia , in the traditional Orava landscape (German Arwa ). The area is located in the political district of Žilinský kraj (Okresy Dolný Kubín , Námestovo and Tvrdošín ).

The administrative seat is in Námestovo .

geography

The area includes the Oravská Magura , Oravské Beskydy mountains, the Podbeskydská vrchovina and the Oravská kotlina basin with the Orava reservoir . Large parts are covered by flysch rock ( sandstone and claystone ). The Biela Orava River , one of the (original) source rivers of the Orava, flows through the area .

The highest mountain is Babia hora ( 1723  m nm ) on the Slovak-Polish border .

Flora and fauna

About half of the protected landscape area is covered by forest. A considerable part is covered by beech , fir and spruce monocultures. Only under the mountains Babia hora, Pilsko and Paráč does the spruce jungle still grow with some mountain ash . In the higher parts of the Babia hora and Pilsko mountains there is still the Krummholz vegetation level. A specific feature of the protected landscape area is the presence of peat bogs to a greater extent than anywhere else in Slovakia. Rare and endangered species such as rosemary heather , swamp porst , round-leaved sundew and other species such as white schnabelried grow there .

The brown bear is one of the more common species, while the lynx is rare. The game ( deer , roe deer and wild boar ) can be found everywhere in the landscape treasure trove. In the landscape protection area you can find capercaillie , hazel grouse and , in recent years, black storks and moose . Among the birds of prey one can name the lesser spotted eagle , the common buzzard or the common raven . A special case is the Orava reservoir, which offers a suitable biotope for water birds.

The other small-scale nature reserves were abolished in 2003 through new zoning. In this system, the area is divided into zones A, B, C and D.

  • Zone A (12.63 km², 2.2%) is protected under the strictest 5th level. These include the former national nature reserves Babia hora, Pilsko and Spálený Grúnik. Arranged for protection without human interference; Hiking outside of marked hiking trails and any economic activity is prohibited.
  • Zone B (33.56 km², 5.7%), where the 4th level applies, which protects all significant peat bogs except Spálený Grúnik, the Jelešňa brook and part of the Orava reservoir with the island of Vtáčí ostrov . Only restricted activities to protect the biotopes, such as mowing, are permitted; hiking outside of marked hiking trails is prohibited.
  • Zone C (147.93 km², 25.2%) is protected under the 3rd level. These include the forests of the Oravské Beskydy, parts of the Oravská Magura and the forest ring around the Orava reservoir and other peat bogs. Economic interventions for the purpose of permanent stability are permitted here.
  • Zone D (393.56 km², 66.9%) is subject to the 2nd level and includes all areas not in the previous zones, ie most of the localities and agricultural areas. Human activities are permitted here, taking into account the diversity, settlement structure and nature characteristics.
