The Latorica Protected Landscape Area ( Chránená krajinná oblasť Latorica in Slovak ) is a protected landscape area in southeastern Slovakia . It is located in the political district of Košický kraj (Okresy Michalovce and Trebišov ) and, along with the protected landscape areas of Dunajské luhy and Záhorie, is one of only three extensive lowland nature reserves in Slovakia.

The administrative seat is in Trebišov .

geography

The protected landscape area is mainly located in the eastern Slovak lowlands , with a smaller part in the Zemplínske vrchy mountains . It is named after the Latorica River , which comes from Ukraine and forms the "main axis" of the protected landscape area. The Latorica absorbs the East Slovak rivers such as Laborec and Ondava , so that ultimately the Bodrog River is created. The protected area follows him to the Slovak- Hungarian border. In addition to the main rivers, the CHKO Latorica also includes dead arms of the affected rivers as well as alluvial forests, artificially constructed canals and surrounding wetlands. Some elevations represent the small blown sand dunes. Since 2004, the protected area has also included part of the Zemplínske vrchy Mountains, which lie within the famous Tokaj wine region .

The lowest point in Slovakia at Streda nad Bodrogom with 94.3  m nm is on the protected area.

Flora and fauna

A 44.05 km² area of the protected landscape area is part of the Ramsar protected areas under number 606 .

In the protected landscape area there are rare water and swamp biotopes that have no equivalent in Slovakia. The flora is diverse, from the humid to xerothermic species. Among the most important species include waterfalls , marsilea quadrifolia , Cirsium brachycephalum (genus thistles ), Lying pimpernel, Hungarian Nacktstängel- iris ( Iris aphylla subsp hungarica. ) Pulsatilla grandis and Hungarian meadow anemone ( Pulsatilla pratensis subsp hungarica. ). Rarer types are z. B. White water lily , yellow pond rose , crab claw , water nut and Beckmannia eruciformis (subfamily Pooideae ). In addition to the riparian forests, there are numerous regularly flooded meadows, for which scattered groups of bushes are characteristic. There are also individual trees, such as willows , to be found.

The location of the landscape protection area on a bird migration path means a larger number of water bird species , both for short stays and for permanent nesting. Some important species of birds: purple heron , egrets , eagles , black stork , black kite and night heron . Other representatives of the animal world include common nasal insects , European praying mantis , large fire butterfly and large oak billy from the insects, bitterling , European dogfish and tinker from the fish. The occurrence of the European pond turtle , which has also become a symbol of the protected landscape area, is significant .
