Palota ( Russian Полата / Polata ; Hungarian Palota ) is a municipality in the far east of Slovakia with 198 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Medzilaborce , a district of the Prešovský kraj .

The municipality is located in the Lower Beskids in the source area of ​​the Vydraňka brook , directly below the main Carpathian ridge and thus on the border with Poland . Two passes lead through the main ridge, namely the Laborec Pass (Slovak Laborecký priesmyk ) north and the Lupków Pass (Slovak Lupkovský priesmyk ) southeast of Palota. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 482  m nm and is eight kilometers from Medzilaborce .

Neighboring communities are Komańcza (in Poland) in the north and east, Výrava and Čabalovce in the south, Ňagov in the south-west and Medzilaborce (district Vydraň ) in the west.

Palota was first mentioned in writing in 1330 as a Palata and at that time it was part of the manor of Humenné . In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Csáky family owned local estates . In 1715 there were nine inhabited and uninhabited households in Palota, in 1787 the village had 70 houses and 498 inhabitants. In 1828 there were 76 houses and 559 inhabitants who were employed as carters, woodcutters, farmers and quarry workers. During the Second World War , Palota suffered great damage as part of the fierce fighting of the Eastern Carpathian Operation and burned out.

Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Palota had 185 inhabitants, including 94 Russians , 43 Slovaks , 39 Roma and three Ukrainians . Six residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .

131 residents supported the Orthodox Church, 39 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church and three residents supported the Roman Catholic Church; one resident professed a different denomination. Two residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 10 residents was not determined.
