Oľka ( Russian Олька / Olka ) is a municipality in the far east of Slovakia with 266 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Medzilaborce , a district of the Prešovský kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the Laborecká vrchovina (part of the Low Beskydy Mountains ) in the upper Oľka valley . The center of the village is at an altitude of 248  m nm and is 28 kilometers from Medzilaborce and 43 kilometers from Vranov nad Topľou .

Neighboring municipalities are Repejov in the north, Čabiny in the east, Radvaň nad Laborcom in the southeast, Hrubov , Pakostov and Ruská Kajňa in the south, Ruská Poruba in the west and Závada in the northwest.

history

Today's municipality was created in 1944 through the merger of the places Nižná Oľka (Hungarian Sztropkóolyka ) and Vyšná Oľká (Hungarian Homonnaolyka ). In 1965 the place Krivá Oľka (Hungarian Gödrösolyka - until 1907 Krivaolyka ), which still forms part of the municipality today.

For the first time, today's municipality was mentioned in writing in 1408 as Elke . For a long time, today's municipality was divided between the estates of Humenné (Krivá Oľka) and Stropkov (Nižná Oľka and Vyšná Oľka). In 1828 there were a total of 123 houses and 910 residents who were employed in forestry and agriculture.

The places in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. In 1944, a large part of the community was burned down by Hitler's German troops in revenge for partisan support.

According to the 2011 census, Oľka had 320 people, including 166 Russians, 136 Slovaks and two Roma and two Ukrainians each. 14 residents gave no information in this regard. 265 residents committed to the Greek Catholic Church, 20 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, ten residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident to the Evangelical Church AB; four residents were of other denominations. Five residents were non-denominational and the denomination was not determined for 15 residents.
